When root canal treatment may be necessary
Deep decay, cracks, old fillings or trauma can inflame the inside of a tooth. Common signs include persistent pain, pain on biting, strong temperature sensitivity or swelling. Sometimes inflammation becomes visible only on an X-ray.
- Severe or persistent toothache.
- Inflamed or dead tooth nerve.
- Swelling or pressure around the root.
- Tooth preservation as an alternative to removal.
The endodontic treatment process
- Diagnosis Symptoms, vitality test, X-ray and hard tooth structure are assessed.
- Removal of inflamed tissue The root canals are accessed and prepared.
- Disinfection The canals are cleaned and irrigated to reduce germs.
- Root filling After preparation, the canals are filled as tightly as possible.
- Stable restoration We then decide whether a filling, partial crown or crown is appropriate.
